Temporary Car Insurance – Right for You?

by Karolina on April 10, 2010

Even though car insurance companies generally provide 12 month policies, there are times when short term or temporary car insurance is a necessity. One incident where temporary insurance would be quite useful is to provide car insurance coverage to a visiting friend or family member who will be driving during their stay. While you could simply add them to your own policy, the risk involved with that is that should they have an accident it could cause you to lose your no claims bonus on your policy. Purchasing a separate temporary car insurance policy for them would avoid this risk.

Likewise, you are wise to purchase temporary car insurance for yourself for a few days or weeks if you are planning to drive someone else’s car while visiting.

Another example of when to buy short term insurance is for the purchase of a new vehicle. Because you need insurance immediately before driving the car off the lot, you may take out one or two day coverage that allows you to drive the car home and then do your shopping around for the best deal on a permanent policy. Temporary policies are generally written on the spot and a copy printed out immediately to get you on the road with good coverage.

Temporary car insurance rates are established by the same criteria as regular car insurance policies. The age and type of car and your driving record and history will be factored into the quote. Quotes for short term insurance are available for free online by auto insurance companies that will offer short term policies. Not all insurance companies will offer this service.

Since a short term policy is generally only purchased for a few days or weeks, it may be easy to overlook other coverages that you should still carry. For example, you still need to have liability coverage the same as you do for regular insurance and you may want to consider collision and comprehensive coverage as well. You never want to leave yourself under insured even on a temporary car insurance policy.
