Still Driving an Old Car? Insurance Rates May Be Cheaper

by Karolina on November 16, 2011

No doubt if you are still driving an older car, you feel you should be paying a lower premium for your car insurance. In most cases, you can reduce the cost for your old car insurance but it is wise to educate yourself on how insurance companies rate older cars to arrive at a yearly premium amount.

One of the main things an insurance company takes into consideration before setting a premium is the cost of replacement parts and availability of those parts. In most cases, an older model car will be less expensive to repair and should therefore qualify for a reduction in rates. However, if your older car is so old or rare that repair and replacement parts are hard to find, you may not qualify for an old car insurance discount. Your insurance agent will be able to tell you whether or not you can apply for a discount.

Another option for obtaining insurance discounts for older cars is to drop your collision and/or comprehensive coverage. Before making this decision, you should first check the actual value of your car in something like the Kelly Blue Book of car values. If your car should be totalled in an accident, you will not likely receive enough of a payout from the insurance to cover the value of the car. If this is the case with your older car, you may as well drop your collision and comprehensive coverage. If you are not comfortable dropping your coverage completely, you can still obtain better old car insurance rates by increasing your deductible amount.

Chances are if you are driving an older car, you are not driving it very far every day. If this is the case, you may qualify for a low mileage discount. If you are driving your car longer distances, it is wise to ask your insurance agent if some type of roadside assistance is included in your coverage. Your older car will most likely be a bit cheaper because it will not be seen as a high risk for theft.

The best way to know for sure if you qualify for any old car insurance discounts is to contact 21st Century Insurance Company directly or speak to a car insurance agent.
